It's All in the Phrasing
I just read this headline on Yahoo! News:
"Most would not select child's sex - survey"
Perhaps a more accurate headline would read:
"Most would not admit to wanting to select child's sex - survey"

I wonder about this.
The story is about British historian David Irving who is notorious (or famous, depending on your mental health) for denying some of the more nitpicky details of the Holocaust. (Little things, like Hitler's involvement, or the existence of gas chambers.)
Well, this reply took a while! Sorry, it’s been a busy month.
Russell on Defining the Center:
What makes zero sense to me is the idea that the media, which have the dual purposes of information distribution and money-making, would not necessarily gravitate to the center. Isn't there more money in the center?
…Am I to believe the owners of these magazines believe so strongly in their liberal ideology that they walk away from readership?
Well… not necessarily. You are simply to believe that they are walking away. There could be a variety of reasons they might be doing that.
…to drive a giant wooden stake through the chest of that rumor. I believe he really would shoot puppies.
Holy crap! I liked Vice-president Cheney even before he started shooting Austin lawyers. Now he's just kissing up.
Is that really necessary? It's not as if he missed.
(I am, of course, glad Mr. Whittington appears to be all right, and hope he will grow to appreciate sharing a rare distinction with Alexander Hamilton, but with a better outcome.)
What? Still no Cereality: fast food cereal restaurant near where I live or work? Too bad… I’d like to check them out. So far they’ve got stores in Tempe, Chicago, and Philadelphia, looks like. I wonder what “in 2006 we will be opening several new units in a variety of settings throughout the country” means?
From Kristin at E! Online via Whedonesque:
“A friend just saw Nate Fillion, Summer Glau and Gina Torres coming out of one of the exec buildings at Paramount where they are putting together the new CW unit.”
If you’re not a Joss Whedon fan, you might not realize how that would be… well, just just about the coolest thing ever. But it would be, oh yes…
On the other hand, maybe they’re all just auditioning for, you know, some reality show, or something.
Speaking of books, I think it’s worth noting that Silverthought: Ignition, a new collection of speculative short fiction featured on Paul Evan Hughes’ silverthought.com site, includes a story by CWSS co-blogger Russell, who is perhaps, too modest to point this out. I’ve got my copy! You can get yours from Amazon.com.
