Zack Snyder's "300" is a stylized, raucous, bloody epic along the lines of "Sin City". It's largely a stage-bound, green screen affair with muted colors and fabulous CG vistas. And did I mention blood? There's lots of it. Most. Blood. Ever.
The fighting sequences are frantic, but of course not so frantic that they seem like real war. They're very staged in their composition, often feeling like you're looking at a living version of one of those Greek bas reliefs on the side of a temple.
The not-fighting scenes play a little slow, a little overly dramatic, a little... pedestrian. I went into this midnight show hoping to be wowed... and I was a little, but not a lot. This was a good film, but certainly not a great one.
I haven't seen this yet, but I have a feeling I'm going to like it, given my fondness for the similarly high-style Sin City. I think the IMAX is playing locally, so I'll probably try to catch that.
