"Journeyman"

I was prepared to give up on this show after I realized it's a less funny retread of "Quantum Leap". The lead (Kevin McKidd as Dan) is being mysteriously swept through time to help people who will have a positive impact on history. At least in "Quantum Leap", they hypothesized that God was the intervening force. And Scott Bakula had to take on the personna of people he "leaped" into.

Here, though, Dan just has to deal with his spiffy phone not being able to connect to antequated cell towers. (There's a funny scene in the second episode where he breaks into his past self's apartment to steal the charger for his old cell phone.)

The pilot was well put together... but I didn't really get any emotional impact from it until the very end when, in a dramatic scene, Dan convinces his wife Katie that, yes, he really is travelling through time. In the second episode, there's more direct impact on her, as she's intensely questioned by Homeland Security after Dan flashes away while they're on an airplane flight. It's strange, but I find the B-plots about his family (he also has a brother who's a cop) more engaging than the A-plots where he's helping people.

I think they've got about three more episodes to at least give me a clue why he's zipping around the timeline before I just get too frustrated to keep watching. But for now, I'm there.
