2007 Movies -- In Review

It's been three days since I posted a list of movies here! I'm so overdue!

This is a longer list, but I won't fill it up too much with commentary, since I've already commented on many of these films in my award-winning "Blockbuster" series of posts. These are the films that were released in 2007 which I have seen. The first one to post a comment saying "You haven't seen 'Knocked Up'?!" gets a serious thump on the side of the head.

The trick here is that I'm listing the films in my order of preference. This relates not to their absolute level of quality, but just how much I enjoyed watching them.

The Great

  • The Bourne Ultimatum

  • Transformers

  • Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

  • Live Free or Die Hard

  • 300
  • -- I know I said in my initial review that this film wasn't great. On repeated viewings, I have changed my mind.
  • 28 Weeks Later
  • -- I'm kind of suprised I never reviewed this one. I was startled by how much I liked it. Then I went back to see the precursor, and just didn't enjoy it as much. Strange, for me at least.
  • Stardust

  • Sunshine
  • -- Two in a row for Mr. Strong!
  • The Kingdom
  • -- And I never reviewed this one! It starts out good, then just gets better and better.
  • Breach
  • -- Two in a row for Mr. Cooper!

    The Good

  • The Golden Compass
  • -- This one deserves a full review... but I'm lazy. I can't quite get how someone can call this "anti-church". It's a friggin' fantasy, people. I'd be anti-church, too, if the church were kidnapping children and maiming them. There's allegory, and there's beyond-allegory, which is where this story went.
  • Disturbia

  • The Hitcher
  • -- "With the who-what-now?" you ask. Sue me. I liked it. And Sean Bean can do no wrong.
  • Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer

  • 3:10 to Yuma

  • Grindhouse
  • -- Yikes! I never reviewed this one, either? Love-love-love the "Planet Terror" half. "Death Proof" is a major snore.
  • Juno

  • There Will Be Blood

  • I Am Legend
  • -- Why CG? Why? (On the monsters, I mean. The bleak, emptied NYC stuff was perfect.)
  • Fracture

  • Michael Clayton
  • -- "Only good? Not great?" Yeah. Felt like a really top notch episode of "Law and Order", except with fewer twists.
  • Ocean's Thirteen
  • -- Two in a row for Mr. Clooney!
  • Beowulf
  • -- Why CG? Why? (Except for Angelina, I mean.)
  • Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End

  • The Simpsons Movie

  • No Country For Old Men

  • Shooter
  • -- True, this one is a bit of a guilty pleasure, but I still like it.

    The Okay

  • Hot Fuzz

  • Zodiac
  • -- I'm convinced this one is showing up on Top Ten lists because people want to make sure Fincher makes another, better movie.
  • Sleuth
  • -- Was the homoerotic stuff strictly necessary?
  • Charlie Wilson's War
  • -- Way too preachy. And the direction was remarkably pedestrian. No real suspense at all.
  • Death at a Funeral

  • Spider-Man 3

  • Next

  • National Treasure: Book of Secrets
  • -- Two in a row for Mr. Cage! (Also, note how the loss of Sean Bean made the sequel so much poorer.)
  • War
  • -- This one I walked into without any knowledge, not even a look at the trailer. It had a few good moments, and it's always fun to watch Jason Statham and Jet Li do their martial arts thing. But it was hamstrung with practically a negative budget and some remarkably awkward editing at the very end.

    The Bad

  • Hitman
  • -- Tried so very hard to be the next Bourne. Failed. Miserably. Also, special anti-kudos to the casting director for putting Timothy Olyphant in the lead role. Not a bad-ass in the least is he.
  • Alien vs Predator: Requiem
  • -- I have a soft spot for the Alien films, but this is easily the least impressive of all six.
  • Resident Evil: Extinction
  • -- While it is better than the previous film in the series ("Resident Evil: Apocalypse"), this is the very definition of damning with faint praise.
  • Ghost Rider
  • -- I said in my review back in February that this would be the worst film of the year. Sadly, I was wrong...
  • Epic Movie
  • -- Even for a film that wasn't trying to take itself in the slightest bit serious, this one went way off the rails. I cannot describe with words how much I hated it.
