"Is John Kerry a Sociopath?"

Roger L. Simon, via Power Line:

I notice some people are disappointed that this article isn't BIGGER. Actually, I think it is very big because it shows the most bizarre capacity to lie about obvious verifiable facts in the midst of a presidential debate, of all things.
Let's assume for a moment this story is for real. That means that what we have here is a candidate for president caught lying, not in the squishy making-promises-he-may-not-keep sense we've come to expect from politicians, or the critic-says-this-and-the-candidate-claims-otherwise sense we've seen with, for example, the Swift Boat charges--but simply flat-out lying about a meeting that never happened.

Simon asks: "Is John Kerry a sociopath?"

Here's my question: If one hasn't voted yet, how big a deal is this? Can you vote for that candidate under any circumstances? Or do you vote for them anyway because you want to advance his party's agenda? And if the latter is true, just how big a sin can one overlook? How many?

(What, did you not read The Dead Zone?)

Now, exactly how is this different from Cheney lying about never having met Edwards?

One sin per ticket seems to even out.

I'd say the answer is: it's not different at all. If Dick Cheney actually lied, it's the same as if John Kerry actually lied.

Each person must therefore decide which is more believable: that during the pressure of a debate, Dick Cheney forgot a few brief handshakes with John Edwards over the space of four years--or that on several occasions, while delivering prepared speeches, John Kerry just forgot that--oh yeah, he never actually had an in-depth multi-hour metting with the United Nations Security Council, even though he's inexplicably described in detail what was discussed. I know I'm constantly forgetting that I've never met with the UN Security Council. Aren't you?

I wasn't really asking for a comparative analysis, though. If either of them lied, how big a deal is this? Can you vote for that candidate under any circumstances? Or do you vote for them anyway because you want to advance his party's agenda? And if the latter is true, just how big a sin can one overlook? How many?
