On the other hand...

...according to the paper posted here by FSU economist Edward Flaherty:

[s]ome of the popular concerns about the debt are clearly misplaced. The federal government cannot go bankrupt, and there is no way to shift any appreciable burden from one generation to the next. We are not, in fact, mortgaging our children's future.

...The recommendation of almost all economists is that the national debt should not be a concern as long as the economy grows faster than the debt.
