"The Media Are the Enemy"
By the way, I agree with Charles Johnson at LGF on this point regarding Hersh:
Once again Seymour Hersh puts his career and his massive ego ahead of the national security of the United States... Im no longer surprised that journalists lack an internal regulatory mechanism (sometimes called ethics or another quaint old-fashioned term that no longer applies, patriotism) to prevent the release of information that could damage their own country. On the contrary, they actively search for that information and release it with great relish. It was fuming over Hersh running his mouth that brough his article to my attention to begin with. But its discouraging that our government apparently lacks the will to prosecute leaks like this as some form of treason or sedition...
The problem I see is that the First Amendment guarantees freedom of the press because the founders of this country recognized power as dangerous, and saw the press to be a mechanism to protect the people from excesses by the government. Unfortunately, the press has power too. Is there sufficient mechanism to protect the people from excesses by the press? A concerted "mole hunt" to wipe out Hersh's Rolodex would be difficult, but might be a good place to start.

Unless the information is inaccurate, and harms the US inappropriately, there's no requirement for the media to be pro-American. In fact, quite the reverse is true. They are required to not be pro-anybody.
We can have freedom of speech, or a "patriotic" media. I'd prefer the former, please.
But, if I ken David's point, I agree that the people who are releasing the sensitive data to the media are the problem and should be dealt with.
(Of course, without the help of the media to whom they blabbed. Sources need to remain confidential as well, to protect the First Amendment in spirit as well as letter.)
